Spring 2019 Newsletter Introduction

On March 13, LCNV hosted its first USCIS Naturalization Ceremony of 2019. Sixty new United States citizens took the stage in front of a packed James Lee Community Center Theatre to celebrate their achievements, and the start of the new lives as Americans. One of these new citizens, Phuong, is an LCNV learner. When Phuong’s classmates learned that she would be receiving her citizenship, they didn’t only want to attend her ceremony, but they also threw her a party afterwards! This small story is a perfect example of the community fostered here at LCNV. Students, staff, and volunteers all work together to build a caring, generous, and learning-focused community.

For learners like Phuong, English is the key to citizenship. LCNV’s classes give her the opportunity to practice and improve her English, a key component of the citizenship exam. Phuong is an inspiration to all of us at LCNV, and her story reflects the unique experience of each LCNV learner, all of whom bring something special to our community.

In this newsletter, you’ll read stories of dedicated instructors and talented students, and the many ways in which you can get involved to make a difference in the lives of beginning-level English language learners. Perhaps you will attend an upcoming LCNV 101 session. Maybe you will choose to make a donation to support LCNV programs (which may be matched by a generous anonymous donor), or even visit our Amazon Wishlist to directly provide the supplies that our learners and teachers need (like a new podium—hint, hint). Hopefully, you will spread the word about the wonderful community here at LCNV. Whichever way you are involved, you help ensure that your friends and neighbors have access to quality beginning-level English language instruction. Thank you!
