Squeals and giggles of laughter could be heard throughout the James Lee Community Center as almost 500 children and parents experienced books coming to
life at LCNV's fourth annual Reading: A Family Affair on Saturday March 20th, sponsored by Verizon.
One could watch the magic of words with the Great Zucchini as he acted out silly antics of story characters. Storytellers Glenna Ohlms and Margaret Chatham mesmerized the children with their stories, from Russian nesting dolls to a familiar "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly." Several children jumped up to join in as characters in "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" with Rainbow Entertainment Company and H-B Woodlawn theater students. With the help of some very big insect puppets, Jeanne Wall was "Going Buggy" with African, Mexican, and Native American tales. The theatre was rocking with wacky songs played by Cathy and Marcy on their banjos, electric guitars, and even a ukulele. All this inspiration encouraged children to write or illustrate their own stories in the Read and Write a Book room.
There was also the chance to have photographs taken with Clifford the Big Red Dog in his WETA Kids room, explore exciting websites like Thinkfinity and PBS KIDS, meet local children's book authors, and meet with the event sponsors and partners. At the end of the day, each child chose a free book to take home and read.
Families submitted comment cards with feedback, saying:
Reading: A Family Affair was a great day of educational family fun.
We hope to see you next year!
