NoVIE's "Government and Nonprofits" Events

In partnership with the Northern Virginia Idea Exchange (NoVIE), the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia sponsored a series of two events with Virginia’s leading gubernatorial candidates: “Government and Nonprofits: a Dialogue about Roles, Responsibilities, and Perspectives”. The first featured Dr. Ralph Northam, Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate. A few weeks later, the second event was held featuring Republican candidate Ed Gillespie.

Both events were highly successful, bringing a near-capacity audience and an engaging discussion moderated by Karen Cleveland, President and CEO of Leadership Fairfax, to the James Lee Community Center. The conversations were informative, enlightening, and provided an opportunity for Fairfax County residents (many of whom attended both events) to hear directly from the candidates. Audience members of all backgrounds, interests, and ages filled the auditorium to listen to and engage with a candidate. The many great questions that Ms. Cleveland and the audience brought to the discussion concerned the best ways for local non-profits to engage with the state of Virginia to advance their goals, and the goals of the state. Topics ranged from affordable housing to the Dillon Rule, education, and the Virginia economy. Local elected officials and WAMU were also in attendance.

Audience feedback for both Mr. Gillespie and Dr. Northam’s appearances was positive, and non-profit staff, supporters, and the interested public all received valuable information about the candidates’ perspectives on how they would work with non-profit organizations.

It was a pleasure partnering with NoVIE to host these events!
