Letter from the Director - Fall 2017

It has been a whirlwind few weeks here at LCNV! Registrations are happening, a new staff member has been welcomed aboard, and I have been learning and absorbing so much in my short time here. I feel enormous gratitude for the warm welcome here at LCNV from Patti, the staff, and all of our supporters, volunteers, and learners. It has been great getting my feet wet in my new position as Executive Director, meeting fellow nonprofit leaders, new funders, and community groups. I am very lucky to have become part of such a compassionate and cooperative community. Your support is the reason why LCNV has been successful for over 55 years.

As LCNV’s new semester begins, it’s been a privilege to see our team in action at each registration. You see everything – the returning learners who are greeted and encouraged by our staff and volunteers to keep working towards their goals, the first time learners who don’t know if they will be able to fill out our form and bring someone along to help or count on one of our volunteers to assist them, and the certified volunteer testers who help with assessments all the while cheering for our learners. Registration time is a reminder that Northern Virginia has such a beautiful diversity and we get to do our part in helping our learners to enhance their situations.

I am proud to share that a new LCNV employee is making this registration process run as smoothly as possible. Jordan Alexander joins us with a background in the AmeriCorps Public Allies program as our new Student Services Coordinator. His experience in education makes him a perfect fit for this position, and we are excited to welcome him to the LCNV family.

The sense of optimism and opportunity as LCNV’s new semester begins is palpable. The new classes, new volunteers, and new and returning teachers have filled our office with energy. I’m looking forward to absorbing new information, cultivating relationships, and getting to know our supporters and learners.

Roopal Mehta Saran, Executive Director
