Getting Started with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia's Classroom Programs Teacher Training

Welcome to LCNV's Online Teacher Training Component!

In this binder, you will find some basic information about LCNV's classroom programs and students, as well as characteristics of adult learners with a brief introduction to the second language acquisition and effective lesson planning. 

We hope that you will find these readings both useful and interesting. Please read Chapters 1 to 4 before you attend in-person training on Saturday. However, you don't have to finish "suggested readings" before this Saturday. 

Chapter 1: Overview of LCNV -- describes LCNV's classroom programs and gives general information about classes and sites.Who are LCNV's learners? Make sure your speakers are on since this portion has voice narration.

Chapter 2: Adult Learners and LCNV's students -- What are the characteristics of adult learners? What motivates them? And what are the some barriers? Please click on the subtab "Characteristics of Adult Learners" for this chapter's reading.

Chapter 3: Basics of Second Language Learning -- What does second language acquisition research and theories offer for classroom teachers?Please click on the subtab "Second Language Acquisition" for this chapter's reading.

Chapter 4: Background to Lesson Planning -- How can teachers write effective lesson plans? What are the key elements that need to be considered?  Please click on the subtab "Effective Lesson Planning" for this chapter's reading.

  • be familiar with the basics of designing language lessons that focuses on students' needs.
  • identify five major components that taken into consideration while planning effective lessons.
  • identify other key aspects such as timing, sequencing, pacing, flexibility etc. and their role creating and managing effective learning environment.
  • be aware of the importance of reflection on each day's lesson to improve both planning and teaching.
